Notes on Ingredients
- Black Beans: Drain and rinse your beans before using. Pinto or white beans would also work but the flavor of the burger will change.
- Breadcrumbs: Any kind of breadcrumbs work including gluten-free. I also love to use old bread and process it in a food processor until I achieve a breadcrumb texture. Oat flour works as well.
- BBQ Sauce: I use a low sugar barbecue sauce which is the binding liquid needed to hold the burgers together while adding a lot of flavor.
- Pecans: Walnuts would also work really well.
Please take note that this is important information about the ingredients used in this recipe and the FULL recipe with measurements and details can be found DOWN BELOW (scroll to it) in the recipe card.

Some of my favorite, fun burger toppings are: vegan coleslaw, bbq sauce, dijon or yellow mustard, coconut bacon strips, vegan cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, hummus, red onions, guacamole, and avocado slices.
Definitely! I wrap each of them in parchment paper one by one. When you’re ready to make them, you can cook them from frozen (adding a couple extra minutes of cooking time for each side) or let them thaw in the freezer before you’re ready to make.
Some of my favorites paired with these burgers are my BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches, Vegan Tempeh Ribs, Healthy Vegan Potato Salad, Grilled Peach Salad, and Spicy Corn.
Yes! Substitute the breadcrumbs for certified gluten-free oat flour or use gluten-free breadcrumbs.

Extra Helpful Tips
- For the stove top method: Use a non-stick pan or spray the pan with a little oil and cook the burgers on medium-heat for about 5 minutes on each side until browned.
- For the grill method: Grill on burgers each side until browned and grill marks are there. For accuracy, use a meat thermometer and cook until the internal temperature is 165 degrees F.
- Serve these on your favorite bun or even on a salad. Top with ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, relish, tomato, lettuce, coleslaw, or whatever else you love!
- Use an indoor grill for mess-free, easy grilling!

Hello 🙂 Your burgers look great and I am planning to make them for dinner tomorrow night. I just have two questions: 1. Do I need 1 cup of dry quinoa and then cook it or do I cook it and measure 1 cup afterwards? 2. Do you think I can make the burgers in the oven?
Thanks!:)
Danielle Keith says
Hi! You will love them. You need 1 cup cooked quinoa! So cook the quinoa then measure out 1 cup of it for the recipe. I would make them on the stove top.
Kristine says
We made these last night and they held together well and had a very good flavor. Will definitely make again – so simple and I get tired of processed burger made from soy protein isolate- so thank you!
Lisa Christman says
Family loved the flavor, I thought a bit strong. Then my daughter found the rice in the microwave! I totally forgot to use it. I’ll definitely be making again, though, WITH the rice!

Sarah says
Hi! Excited to make these for dinner – however we can’t have nuts – think these would hold up well without the nuts? Thanks!
Stacy says
Do you have to add the nuts? We have nut allergies in the family, but I really want to try these!! TIA
Taylor says
Hi! Taylor from team HealthyGirl here!
You could try doing a seed or something with a crunch that will help with binding the burgers instead!
Susie says
Yummy! Freeze after cooking or before?

These are delicious 😋 and we are meat eaters! I’ll be making them again! I cooked my beans in the Instant pot, used gluten free bread crumbs and made guacamole for topping. My husband loved them also! Thanks for sharing this yummy recipe!

Made these last night. Tasted really good, even my non-vegan wife and daughter liked it.
I did make a few changes because I did not want to run to the store. I used a blend of leftover brown rice an quinoa and used cashews instead of pecans (I did not have pecans).
Leftovers for lunch today were even better.
Thank you for the recipe.
Barbara Grattan says
We loved these. We plan on making them many more times.
Andrea says
Flavor was amazing! I followed recipe exactly (using quinoa) but mine fell apart and was really crumbly. I have 5 more pattied to cook, what did I do wrong?
Taylor From HealthyGirl Kitchen says
Try adding a little more sauce to bind it together
Barb says
So excited to try this recipe, BUT, I personally am not a big fan of BBQ sauce. Do you have any suggestions for what I could substitute that will still act as enough of a binder? Thank you so much!
Jordan Stacy says
Hi Barb! Jordan from the HealthyGirl team here. Yay can’t wait for you to try! I think ketchup (or mustard if you really enjoy mustard) would work as the perfect replacement.
