Notes on Ingredients
- Milk: I used Milkadamia macadamia nut milk but any kind of plant-based milk is fine.
- Cacao: Love chocolate? Try my fudgy Sweet Potato Brownies and Healthy Twix Bars next!
- Flour: Gluten-free flour blend works well but you can substitute with oat flour or regular all-purpose if not gluten-free.
- Coconut sugar: I used coconut sugar to keep this refined sugar free but you can use cane sugar or a zero sugar sweetener like monk fruit or stevia.
- Applesauce: I used 1 tablespoon of applesauce to make this mug cake oil-free but if you aren’t oil-free, you can use 1 tablespoon of melted coconut oil or vegan butter.

Commonly Asked Questions
I haven’t tried, but you could try substituting the cacao powder with more gluten-free flour and add vanilla extract.
I suggest 60 seconds–depending on the type of microwave you have. If you prefer a gooier texture, 45-50 seconds is better. Avoid over microwaving it as this can make the cake spongey.
Use a wide-mouth mug so the cake has room to spread out and cook evenly in the mug. Plus, it’s easier to eat this way!
I used Milkadamia macadamia milk for this recipe. It’s creamy and has a delicious nutty flavor which elevates this cake. Use the Milkadamia store locator to find products near you! You can substitute 1:1 with any other milk you prefer.

Extra Helpful Tips
- If you want a gooier consistency, cook for 45 seconds instead of 1 minute. Careful not to overmicrowave–the cake will get spongey.
- You can use cocoa or cacao powder – either works.
- Mix in your favorite add-ins like chocolate chips, walnuts, coconut flakes, chopped dates, or anything else.

How to Store
This is a single serve recipe that’s ready in one minute, so it’s best made and eaten fresh. If you have leftovers or want to save the rest for later, refrigerate for up to 2 days. To reheat, microwave a bit until warm again.
