What’s the deal with probiotics?
As a holistic health coach, this is the one supplement that I think is non-negotiable (aside from B12). Everyone should be taking a probiotic. 70% of immunity comes from your gut, and so many health issues stem from an unbalanced gut. A probiotic helps to create a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut microbiome. A gut imbalance is when your gut has more bad bacteria than good bacteria. This can happen from a poor diet, being on antibiotics, or illness. Taking a probiotic helps with digestion, allergies, mental health problems like anxiety or depression (95% of serotonin is created in the gut), and boosting the immune system.
Taking a probiotic supplement completely healed my gut when it was wrecked from antibiotics and healed my imbalance. Before taking this probiotic I was unable to digest cruciferous veggies and tofu and now I can eat them without any issue. If you have a sensitive digestion system I would highly recommend taking a probiotic supplement. However, everyone can benefit from it.
- Improved digestion
- Clearer skin
- Decreased anxiety + depression
- Less bloating
- Helps to increase absorption of nutrients
- Balances gut bacteria
- Boosts immune system
- Prevents constipation
- Aids in weight loss
My favorite brand of probiotics is BIOHM. Their probiotics are the first probiotic on the market to not only address bacteria in the gut but fungi as well. I also suggest taking a prebiotic in addition to the probiotic. Experts at Biohm health explain that, “prebiotics optimize your gut’s probiotic environment by creating an ideal feeding ground for probiotic organisms”. When I started taking the prebiotic, I noticed a huge difference in my digestion and I am experiencing much less bloating. However, if you had to start with just one, I would get the probiotic.
My Favorite Probiotic from BIOHM
I love BIOHM probiotics because they are high quality and do not contain any additives, chemicals, artificial ingredients or animal products. BIOHM probiotics have also been proven to break down digestion plaque, which is essential to having a healthy gut. They are also very convenient – unlike a lot of probiotics they do not need to be refrigerated and you can take them at any time of the day, with or without food.
In addition to taking probiotics, it is important to eat foods that support your gut health as well. Fermented foods, alkalinizing foods, and foods high in fiber are going to be your best friends!
- Non-dairy yogurt (coconut milk yogurt)
- Dark leafy greens
- All veggies
- Celery juice
- Nuts + Seeds
- Legumes (rinse/soak first)
- Whole grains
One of the major keys to gut health is reducing inflammation. Ditching animals products like dairy can be very beneficial for your gut and for your health in general. Adopting a plant-based lifestyle is amazing for your health but your gut will definitely thank you!
